SENATOR SMITH: What else happened?
MR. BUCKLEY: One of the firemen that was working on the Titanic told me, when I got on board the Carpathia and he was speaking to me, that he did not think it was any iceberg; that it was only that they wanted to make a record, and they ran too much steam and the boilers bursted. That is what he said.
We sighted the lights of the big steamer, the Carpathia.
All the women got into a terrible commotion and jumped around. They were hallooing and the sailors were trying to keep them sitting down, and they would not do it They were standing up all the time.
When we got into the Carpathia we were treated ven good. We got all kinds of refreshments.
SENATOR SMITH: Did you feel a shock from the collision when the ship struck?
MR. BUCKLEY: Yes; I did.
SENATOR SMITH: And did that wake you up?
MR. BUCKLEY: It did. I did not feel any shock in the steamer; only just heard a noise. I heard a kind of a grating noise.
SENATOR SMITH: Did you get right out of bed?
MR. BUCKLEY: Yes; I did.
SENATOR SMITH: When you got out, you got into the water? There was water in your compartment in the steerage?
MR. BUCKLEY: Yes; water was there slightly. There was not very much.
SENATOR SMITH: How much?
MR. BUCKLEY: The floor was only just getting wet. It was only coming in under the door very slightly.
SENATOR SMITH: You had two or three boys with you?
MR. BUCKLEY: Yes; three boys that came from the same place in Ireland.
SENATOR SMITH: What became of those other three boys?
MR. BUCKLEY: I can not say. I did not see them any more after leaving the room where I parted from them.
SENATOR SMITH: They were lost?
MR. BUCKLEY: Yes; they were lost.
SENATOR SMITH: Was there any effort made on the part of the officers or crew to hold the steerage passengers in the steerage?
MR. BUCKLEY: I do not think so.

LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Que s’est-il passé d’autre?
M. BUCKLEY : Un des chauffeurs qui travaillait sur le Titanic m’a dit, quand je suis monté à bord du Carpathia et qu’il m’a parlé, qu’il ne pensait pas que c’était un iceberg; que c’était seulement parce qu’ils voulaient battre un record, qu’ils naviguaient à toute vapeur et que les chaudières avaient explosées. C’est ce qu’il a dit.
Nous avons aperçu les lumières du grand vapeur, le Carpathia.
Toutes les femmes sont entrées dans une terrible agitation et elles sautaient. Elles criaient et les marins essayaient de les faire s’assoir, et elles ne voulaient pas. Elles se levaient tout le temps.
Quand nous sommes arrivés à bord du Carpathia, nous avons été bien traités. Nous avons eu toutes sortes de rafraîchissements.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Avez-vous ressenti un choc lorsque le navire a heurté l’iceberg?
M. BUCKLEY : Oui, je l’ai ressenti.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Et cela vous a-t-il réveillé?
M. BUCKLEY : Oui. Je n’ai pas ressenti de choc sur le navire; j’ai seulement entendu un bruit. J’ai entendu une sorte de grincement.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Êtes-vous sorti du lit tout de suite?
M. BUCKLEY : Oui.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Lorsque vous êtes sorti, étiez-vous dans l’eau? Il y avait de l’eau dans votre compartiment, dans l’entrepont?
M. BUCKLEY : Oui; il y avait un peu d’eau. Il n’y en avait pas beaucoup.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Combien?
M. BUCKLEY : Le plancher ne faisait que se mouiller. L’eau entrait très légèrement sous la porte.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Vous aviez deux ou trois garçons avec vous?
M. BUCKLEY : Oui; trois garçons qui venaient du même endroit en Irlande.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Qu’est-il advenu de ces trois autres garçons?
M. BUCKLEY : Je ne peux pas le dire. Je ne les ai plus vus après avoir quitté la pièce où je les ai quittés.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Ont-ils péri?
M. BUCKLEY : Oui, ils ont péri.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Y a-t-il eu des efforts de la part des officiers ou de l’équipage pour retenir les passagers de 3ème classe dans l’entrepont?
M. BUCKLEY : Je ne le crois pas.
